On the highway of open love careless wind ceased to blow,
Like a forgotten act,
Like an amazing step that will take us nowhere in the crowd.
You stand alone with careful fingers clenched by your side,
Never looking, hardly breathing you quietly wait for a sign.
Forget the miseries of yester nights,
Forget the beating cries of today,
Tomorrow he promised you some alcohol with a clear red human eye.
What is the trouble of your forgotten mind?
What is the final laugh all about?
You look for life in this hectic little ride.
They have a lot of issues with you,
Can’t they see your skin is about to tear,
The skin of a thousand years that you wear on yourself,
The clear picture of a human ghost that you are,
From the holy town of northern land to the filthy alleys of this homeland,
You have travelled all.
Your children lost, scattered and unattended by holy gods,
Your life is unwanted, battered and finally shattered by human lords.
They have called you crazy,
You never walked with that phony poise,
They have called you filthy,
You never understood those bitter lies.
You scream in the deafness of living mortals, drunk and despair,
While shivering in the holes of empty street corners
You have lost that life, that zeal to dance or sing or make love with bodies of dark Halloween.
You went mad with rage the day they made you insane,
The day you hit them on their guts with a handful of rage,
The day when music stopped from reaching your senses
The day your sun went down in an eternal dusk and you waited with hopes of a new sunrise,
The day dawn was some memory of the distant past.
The day your lover cried gallons and then later made love to your friend in white muslin bed sheets,
They live by the river now,
Away from your maddening outbursts of hate.
And today you are here now,
Still living,
Breathing in their air
Breathing out their air,
Oh you human ghost of shame.
And now you stand on the highway,
With a heavy head and lost mind,
With dried tears that turned black with heat
Looking for a refuge,
Watching people go by in various shapes and sizes,
Through sin and sorrow and crime and life and goodness,
Yes goodness,
They have some of that in them it seems.
And now you want to live and watch your children grow,
Tell them stories while soft music plays in the smell of summer wine,
Now you wish you could read Shelly and memorize your favorite stanzas.
Yes, now you want to be human again,
Like as if you know what that means and you will show them how it is.
Now you watch little birds go by and the windows of human lives close in quiet rows,
Without an iota of hope you search for life and a whole lot of love that was snatched from your share.
